Nick J Fox is research professor of sociology at the University of Huddersfield; previously professor of sociology at the University of Sheffield; and also adjunct (honorary) professor of sociology at Torrens University, Australia. Nick has authored five academic books, and over 100 academic papers.
For the past 20 years Nick has used the innovative more-than-human insights of ‘new materialist’ and ‘posthuman’ social theory in his academic social science research, exploring topics from health to environmental sustainability to sexualities to research methodology.
The highly-acclaimed and cited academic text Sociology and the New Materialism (Sage Books, 2017, with Pam Alldred) has cemented by reputation as a leading new materialist scholar.
The last five years of Nick’s work have been devoted to world-leading and cutting-edge research on social class and political economy, using these more-than-human social theory approaches. Early in 2023, Nick completed a re-analysis of Marx’s Capital, which revealed insights into what capitalism does that have never before been fully addressed in sociology, or in either right- or left-leaning political economic theory. The implications of these findings are immediate, offering opportunities to adapt capitalist markets in ways that can address the most pressing issues of the day, including climate change, poverty, social inequalities and environmental degradation.
Nick has presented his work widely, with many invited talks at conferences and public lectures in the UK, Australia, Canada, Germany, South Korea. He is convenor of the UK Applied Sociology Group and co-convenor of the British Sociological Association New Materialisms study group.
